Rereading the first volume: the pattern Mizuno picked is "O-man's favorite". He's described as "the much-beloved concubine of the third shogun, Iemitsu"!

She is such a master. I didn't catch that connection till now.

Ahahaha, yeah, I got spoiled by Amazon's description of the 3rd vol calling her Iemitsu. So yeah. In the end Iemitsu really was a woman I guess.
