Taken from... a lot of people.
I want you to ask me something you think you should know about me, something that should be obvious, but you have no idea about, or something you've always been curious about but have never asked, or something completely silly that you'd like me to answer for kicks. No limits on the range of questions, either: ask me anything you want to know about, whether it's a fannish opinion or a question about a fic of mine or trivia about my real life or my thoughts on events in the offline world. Ask away. Then post this in your LJ and find out what people don't know about you!

Do you think that discussions of racism and the problems arising from it are too centered on the United States?
Also, do you like tamagoyaki?
no subject
Yeah, they are mostly centered in USA, but that in particular is not something that bothered me (if we are talking about discussions of racism in fandom, because there are a lot of discussions of racism around the english-speaking blogosphere and those are pretty varied) because it gave space to non-white people living in white-dominated countries to talk about their experiences. And personally? It made me note things I had not note before. (Like white privilege in Latin America countries, people don't talk about that here, but it exist, very much.)
It's complicated, I'm going to be honest, my experience tells me that talking about racism of non-white countries in a white dominated fandom is... uh, pretty head-desk inducing.
I'm talking mostly for myself and just myself, and not going to tell other non-white people living in non-western/developing countries what to think.
There is Europe, Canada, Australia, etc., but those are pretty much talked. (A lot of white-European people are in denial too, that's another matter.)
Ahahha, I just googled tamagoyaki. Damn it, I never ate it before. :( But wow, it sounds like something I would love.

Now, people of color in USA taking too much space/talking too much about racism in USA/"not including" other POC? Never. Because I have heard a lot of white-identified Latin Americans going "but black people just talk about themselves!! Things here are SO different!!" mostly because they don't want to hear discussions about racism in fandom. So yeah.
/End with the rambling.

I wasn't asking merely about racism within fandoms, but as a whole (which, come to think of it, really is too broad a subject for a simple Internet meme--I'm sorry about that!). It's just that I worry about the U.S. dominating discussions of race relations online (it's usually to be expected in our printed media), as the U.S. seems to dominate discussions of global crises, translations and dubs for foreign media, economics...quite a few things. Clearly, it's not the center of the world, nor are its people the standard by which other peoples should be judged. (I hope only a minority of Americans think of ourselves and our nation this way.)
And I have been interested in finding out how racism and white privilege manifest themselves in other countries. The Internet's proven to be a far more valuable resource than I thought!
Finally, tamagoyaki is delicious and easy to make (if you have dashi or mirin at hand). :D

Ah, you are right, actually, due english-speaking 1st world countries having most of the world resources, it's more easy to find information and discussion about them because their people have better internet access. That's how privilege works too.
Yeah, internet it's a pretty amazing thing, sadly still isn't for everybody thanks to capitalism. But there is a lot of discussion going around by non-western people in non-western countries!
Oh, thank you! I suck at cooking, but I'm sure as hell would love to prove that. XD
