So. Yeah. Uni sacrificed herself. She said, "Mother and Grandmother, I will join you in a short time."

And you see, All of the Sky Arcobalenos are women for a reason. Yes, you would say, they are the leaders of the Arcobalenos and the most powerful of them, and they are women! Except that it plays into the old trope of pretty, powerful, kind, young, predominately cis women leaders who have to be protected.

Reborn in this chapter said this: "The sky Arcobaleno is blessed with deep emotion, and has a smile brighter than anyone, but they also shoulder the heaviest of responsibilities and are taken away from us by Destiny."

And see this trope of young pretty and kind leader women is that they not only die young sacrificing themselves, they die because they are giving birth. Or better phrased, the trope of these women self-sacrifice is very related to birth and motherhood. They are mothers who sacrifice their lives giving birth to something more important than themselves. That's their role. Destiny. Their motherly duty as Uni showed us (she just literally gave birth to the rest of the Arcobalenos while saying it was what she "had to do").

Don't believe me? See Luce's character design. Yeah, she could have been pregnant with her daughter, but they always chose to show her like that. She was the first Sky Arcobaleno we know also.

I appreciated Uni showing fear, though. The show of humanity was nice. Of course, they shonen-ruined it by having to state (can't remember who did, Byakuran?) and explain to us that She Was Fearing Death.

People are calling Uni Mary Sue. This being men worship except black men Reborn's fandom you shouldn't wonder why they don't call out, I don't know, Reborn's uber perfectness. (And well, compared with the men, she isn't that big of a Mary Sue. Boy, isn't Hibari boring.)

ETA: It have been brought to my attention that people can make the argument of Amano or whoever never thinking about any of this. And they would be right, I'm not saying that whoever uses this trope is consciously linking it to sacrificed motherhood. It's just a trope that is associated with cissexual femininity for a reason. What I mean is that Amano didn't have to think in dept about any of this, but you can see a strong link between pregnancy, motherhood and sacrifice for the Sky Arcobalenos. I mean that there are some things that are very much rooted in people's psyches (and we all know that, men and women are treated very differently in fiction and in reality). Like women self-sacrifices are usually passive, without a fight; in contrast with the more typically masculine self-sacrifice of the "taking you with me" kind.

And yeah, the trope may not be universal, but it's very well alive and used in manga. I could give some less subtle examples.

Dude. Also, I depress myself reading Weekly Shonen Jump's popularity polls. Damn it, people should vote more for Yamamoto, I'm just saying. I'm not even seeing Lal there, but that's not much of a surprise, so.

Is Hibari topping for the second year in a row in that poll, too?
