Ah, but you do know how my hiatus work

Do you know what is awesome? [community profile] dark_agenda is awesome.

The problems of White and Western consumption of Manga and Anime.

I wish I could quote all of the quotes there, but I will go for:

[personal profile] inkstone said in her post: "My wish for Yuletide is that people who offer to write in anime and manga (and manhwa and manhua, if there are manhua being offered) fandoms, and do write in those fandoms, to please do so with respect to the source's host culture."

She was prompted by [personal profile] wistfuljane's observation:

I've noticed some trends in animanga fanworks that left me rather perplexed:

* the prevalent of historical AUs set in Regency or some other British historical periods and the rather absence of historical AUs set in say Heian, Edo or some other Japanese or Asian periods;
* the prevalent of stories based on European fairy tales or folklores and the rather lack of stories based on Japanese or Asian fairy tales or folklores;
* the prevalent of stories centering around (party) games or activities that either originated in America or more common there and the rather absence of stories centering around (party) games or activities that originated in Japan/Asia or more common there

Then, of course, there's the rather lack of anime vids set to non-English songs. (And the more nitpicking stuffs like glaringly out-of-place English sayings or phrases in fanfic.)

The discussion that this prompted is something I love.

End of de-hiatus intermediate intermission. Damn, chemistry.

I don't tell you this often enough, but I really appreciate all the interesting and important links you share. *subscribes to [community profile] dark_agenda* I've also loved your posts highlighting & celebrating Asian actors in Hollywood.

*hugs* Good luck with all those damn exams.

I see this so often in Tsubasa fic. Apparently a lot of people have absolutely no concept whatsoever that Nihon is, in fact, a mythological Japan, and what that entails.

It's because of things like that that I am going out of my way to make Bandit Kite as Japanese as I conceivably can (and even then, I'm probably falling dreadfully short, but that is because I am not Japanese and I acknowledge that). It's also why I make any of my fics based in animangaverses that originated in Japan as Japanese as I conceivably can (i.e. Fay becoming a Shinto priest and discussing, I dunno, JAPANESE stories with a Japanese princess).

As clarification, I would like to say that I'm not the sort of person that believes Japanese culture to be superior to any Asian culture or any culture at all for that matter, it is simply the one that I personally have had some experience with besides my own.

Arg. Tsubasa, don't even start. Just, arg.

Yes, and most people would benefit in doing some research. The "American" interpretation of manga is something that drives me crazy. Really, people, some research never killed anyone.
