No -- was a local friend. I bit my tongue before I could comment on her post. I don't know sometimes, Vie. I feel like we're mired in so much internalized racism and colonial mentality, it's more than enough work just not to drown.
To be honest, I'm torn between "YAY! Awesome character as a woman and a person of colour!" and "... they are doing it so they can have a romance/sexual tension between the main characters but no gay people, right".
As far as I know, it's not canonical in any version, no (though I'm not a Holmes expert).
I didn't mean to make it sound as if they are erasing gay characters, and I know realize that it sounds like that. What I was trying to say is that I have the feeling that they didn't make this choice because it's progressive, but simply because having UST between the main characters is pretty much a requirement in mainstream US shows and I don't think they'd do it if both are the same gender.
That said: I'd rather have a casting/acting choice that is ACTUALLY progressive than one that isn't really but which we can PRETEND is progressive. I definitely agree with that.

Dude. I don't know what their intention is. Casting Watson as a woman of color IS progressive.
*More progressive than casting a white cis man who isn't going to have a sexual relationship, but people aren't going to complain anyway because is a cis white male.
I actually agree with that, that's what I was trying to say in my last paragraph. I said I'm pretty cynical about why they're doing it, but if the end result is good I'm not going to complain about it.
... not that I was going to complain otherwise. That didn't translate into English well. /facepalm
Uhm. But they still haven't show anything. If someone going to assume for every female character out there... heck, f I want to, I can say they make the "slash subtext" to please the slash fans who loves their white men.
Anyway, what I really mean is: woman of color >> cis white man. I don't care about anything else.
