Cannot get better than Lucy Liu as Watson. It doesn't.

No -- was a local friend. I bit my tongue before I could comment on her post. I don't know sometimes, Vie. I feel like we're mired in so much internalized racism and colonial mentality, it's more than enough work just not to drown.

To be honest, I'm torn between "YAY! Awesome character as a woman and a person of colour!" and "... they are doing it so they can have a romance/sexual tension between the main characters but no gay people, right".

Soooo maybe I'm more cynical than I thought. :|

Well, are there any non-fannish iterations of Holmes and Watson in which they are, in fact, gay?

I'd rather have a casting/acting choice that is ACTUALLY progressive than one that isn't really but which we can PRETEND is progressive.

As far as I know, it's not canonical in any version, no (though I'm not a Holmes expert).

I didn't mean to make it sound as if they are erasing gay characters, and I know realize that it sounds like that. What I was trying to say is that I have the feeling that they didn't make this choice because it's progressive, but simply because having UST between the main characters is pretty much a requirement in mainstream US shows and I don't think they'd do it if both are the same gender.

That said: I'd rather have a casting/acting choice that is ACTUALLY progressive than one that isn't really but which we can PRETEND is progressive.
I definitely agree with that.

I actually agree with that, that's what I was trying to say in my last paragraph. I said I'm pretty cynical about why they're doing it, but if the end result is good I'm not going to complain about it.

... not that I was going to complain otherwise. That didn't translate into English well. /facepalm
