Any number of things make a post
I had a sudden epiphany about Penguindrum. And I know. It's genius. Thank me later.
So. I was thinking that Ikuhara couldn't make Shouma into a girl because his (arguably) main character would have been WAY to similar to the idealistic Utena (and I'm convinced he tried to show he could make something different from SKU and of quality; I don't think he succeeded, but all these are things about the Ikuhara in my mind, so who cares).
But. Do you know who would have been perfect as a female character? Kanba. The little sister (because that stays) infatuation would read totally different (because cis, straight, playboy teenager obsessed with his pure sister... ugh); and Kanba would be a playgirl/going from a boyfriend to another without the slut-condemnation (and the awful scenes of Masako dispatching Kanba's female exes), and it would be AWESOME. Man, I totally wouldn't have to despise it. (Masako could be a boy, but Kanba still would choose the girl Himari).
Now, I need someone to write me the fanfic. You know I can't write.

No. 6 novels are an amazing thing, they talk about social issues/inequalities like whoa, everyone has to read it (sadly, the anime doesn't stand a chance, mainly for its ending), etc., but now I just have to say that woman DID the research in a very different area:
Nezumi said abruptly. "Tell me, what does the immune system do when a virus invades a human body?"
"Huh?" Sion was caught off-guard. "Well, first the natural killer cells― that's a type of lymphocyte― find the cells that have been infected with the virus, and destroy them. Then the ribonuclease become active and suppress the spread of the virus. Next―"*
YES. YES. I mean, other things happen, but dude, she mentioned the enzyme! And all this in a dialogue of little importance.

Shouma vs Utena viewpoint + a crossoverfic
I don't think Shouma (sweet-natured, meek) and Utena (brash, tomboyish) are at all similar: if anything, I think Utena resembled an older Momoka, but with a casually playful edge.
That being said, I do have a post-series for both series Utena/Penguindrum fic ongoing (over 24000 words as of now). No, Kanba is not a girl there, but he is a shadow boy as result of fate-train transfer. Think you'd be interested?
