Lucy Liu

I'm late and have no time since tomorrow is my exam. But I enjoy these.

This is A grade Hollywood star, Lucy Liu is probably one of the names you can't not known. I admit I'm not a big fan of Ally McBeal, Charlie's Angels or Kill Bill, but I think she is a very talented, hard-working woman who has earned her place among the greatest.

She is hot as hell too. But you knew that already.

Born in Queens, New York, daughter to Taiwanese immigrants. Wiki says she didn't speak English until she was five years-old.

Prolific woman here.

Le sigh.

I was willing to deal with her up until Kill Bill. At that point it was like, "I know you're not hurting for money at this point, and... do you really want to participate in the hate fest of asian men? Oh, I guess so."

Yeah, I know. Just. I know. But since even Chow Yun-Fat did PotC 3, I guess I don't hold it against her. Much. Tarantino? Fuck, white guy and that uber-ugly white-wash.

Yeah, though Chow Yun Fat isn't coming from a background of having grown up w/Western stereotypes, and he hasn't made playing the stereotype his career...

Which why I give a pass to a lot of the other folks in Kill Bill (Gordon Liu, Kuriyama, etc.)

Good point.

There is something to think about. I like her, she is a woman of color, I'm sure she probably she didn't have it easy, and probably has more trouble than white women in finding roles in racist and sexist Hollywood. But you are right.

Well, that's why I was willing to give a pass up until that point- at that point she was doing stuff like Charlie's Angels, commercials, etc. - she wasn't hard up for roles or money.

Plus the whole movie is about asian submission to white folks - the men are faceless minions to be killed (and spanked for complete emasculation), but even her own role, involves not just her physical defeat, but her acknowledgement that Umma is a "better warrior" (code: asian) than she is before finally dying.

Ick.

No, seriously, that movie is a mess. A completely absolute mess. White people find orientalism attractive? Well, now they can play with it all they like, and kill Asian people while appropriating all they find fascinating!

I remember I kind of loved her character in Ally McBeal, but since I was like, ten the last time I saw it, I can't be sure if that'd be the case now or not.

I still love her, 'tho ♥

Yeah, I couldn't stand that show, but her character was interesting. XD

Yaaaay! :)

I sort of don't want to see the show now, because I _did_ like it back then, and I'd rather remember it fondly than it to turn into something headdesky.
