It was going pretty good until it got to the part where those guys almost hit Kobato. What. The hell was that? Can someone explain it to me? (And yeah, it's just rhetorics, please don't try.) I mean, dude, no. That was wrong. In so many levels.

I guess Kobato is supposed to be a an innocent story for younger audiences (I may be wrong), so if you aren't supposed to treat violence against women properly, don't bring it up. It was worse because it happened just to show how awesome Fujimoto was, which he wasn't, he acted like an asshole to Kobato. Who, by the way, was just attacked - and no, it mattered shit she didn't care, I'm talking about treatment of topic and viewer reaction. That was fucked up and I totally spaced out there.

I was not only trivializing something very important, it was aesthetically wrong too (and, yeah, these two things aren't independent of each other either). It contrasted really bad with the rest of the episode (and maybe the series? I haven't read that manga except for some chapters).

It got better after that. I totally lost interest in Fujimoto, and my crush for Ioryogi decreased (which just started due to his voice anyway), but Kobato was just charming, and the scene with the woman telling her that the child's mother was not there because she "was working hard for his sake" was a good turn out (because she wasn't dead or something overly dramatic, she was working), it almost made up for the incident before.

[personal profile] jlarinda was right thought, the bottle appearance was also off-putting. Of course, incomparable with the "almost-hit".

And Monday I have my P-chem theoretic exam, so I won't have time to breath until then. I'm trying to enjoy the leisure time I have left.

When Fujimoto first arrives, something similar happens; this old guy thinks Kobato's a prostitute, and Kobato doesn't get it and tries to help him, and it's Fujimoto who saves her in the end.

What? A prostitute? What? Is it supposed to be some theme about men abusing her?

And you know how prostitutes are regraded as the epitome of "lewdness", "opposite to innocence," and Kobato is depicted at uber innocent (and vulnerable which makes is even wronger)... and I pretty much doubt the series is trying to bring some image of respect towards prostitutes, so... uhm. Men hit on her and then see her as expendable because she is innocent?

Mmmm, more like, she's pretty and young, this guy's a perv, she offered to heal the guy and he misunderstood, and then SHE misunderstood 'cause she's the epitome of naive, shenanigans happened?

Hmmm. I guess I have to see that chapter. Just some two unfortunate and very much related scenes.

Interesting. Did they change that scene for this one? I mean, the stranger who confuses her for a prostitute for the strangers who hit on her and the try to hit her (clearly they don't care about her), and then Fujimoto saves her.

T-they do get blasted off by Ioryogi, first? Same with the old man in the manga :x I think the manga scene is more suggestive (I believe the anime softened it up to just guys trying to "hit on her" rather than thinking she was a prostitute?), but in both versions they only try and hurt her once they've been attacked first.

but in both versions they only try and hurt her once they've been attacked first.

I don't think it changes anything since it was what CLAMP/whoever put there to create the effect of "Fujimoto saves her from bad guys who see her in a sexual and potentially dangerous way".

Damn, I'm tired. Going to sleep now!

At least later on, Kobato's the one to save Sayaka and the kids from the yakuza guys, and the one to save Fujimoto from Okiura?

[identity profile] la-vie-noire.livejournal.com 2009-10-08 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, well, that sounds good!

[identity profile] jlarinda.livejournal.com 2009-10-08 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
The scene with her standing up to the yakuza guys is so great. Up until then, Kobato seemed like just a regular cute ditz, but there she stands up in front of Sayaka with her arms stretched out and tells the guys to LEAVE. Even though she's shaking, and keeps doing so even after they leave >:

And hey, pretty, young, innocent woman =/= guys will inflict violence or assault her. You know, it talks volumes that people take that as a given.

[identity profile] jlarinda.livejournal.com 2009-10-08 06:28 am (UTC)(link)
You mean the guys who hit on her, Fujimoto by stepping up to defend her, or just the concept of the scene in general?

[identity profile] la-vie-noire.livejournal.com 2009-10-08 06:30 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, the concept.
